Nameless at Western Springs

This morning's run took me to Western Springs Park, and I then went along various paths around different lakes and through groves of trees. Because it was so overcast, there was insufficient light at that time of the morning to get good pictures of the water birds of many varieties that are found there.

I was tempted by the lovely soft light reflected in the main lake, with a couple of black swans in for interest.

But this was so bizarre, I have to share it. It is tucked away in a wee grove on a base placed amongst scattered volcanic rock a little off a path which would be not part of the usual routes taken by visitors to the park. Try as I might I could find nothing official about this sculpture. The nearest to information was a line on a Council page which glibly stated that there are some sculptures in the park.

In 2010, a photographer resident in West Auckland posted his photograph of this sculpture on his web page, without the more recently added decoration of the face. He called it Acrobats, and then said that he had been unable to find any information, including what it is called nor who was the sculptor.

I do remember a sculpture workshop was held in one of the small areas left over from when stone was quarried here. It would have been perhaps 30 years ago. We could see the blocks of stone scattered on the grass, and work took place on these blocks over many weeks, indeed months. And then it stopped.

Perhaps this is one that was left over, and was moved to where it is now. I didn't investigate to see how stable it is, and therefore have no idea if it is played on by children. Or merely used for adding decoration.
