A Congregation of Egrets

White and heron-like,
facing into the late sun
preening, disgruntled

~ carliewired

Yuma, Arizona is in the winter range for these egrets. I see them around the irrigation canals like this one on Avenue 4E. They are always in large numbers.

In the 1800s, egrets were hunted almost to extinction for their beautiful plummage. Now, with some legal protections, they are increasing their numbers again.

We had a cloudy morning with a little rain. This group seems very unhappy. They are each hunched over as if tired or grumpy or cold. They sat in their group stretched alongside the canal's edge as if waiting for something.
