Hunting The Wren?

As I closed the gate behind me this afternoon I noticed what I thought was a clod of earth or a teasel seedhead on the drive. It was Jenny - dead. :(

I was on the way to Latton woods so I took her little body with me. I got a nice pic of a fly on an impossibly orange fungus but couldn't stop thinking about my tiny corpse. Her lifeless form weighs the same as a pound coin. It was a privilege to examine her in detail. That fine and sharp beak, strong feet and claws, lovely light eyebrow, fantail and exquisitely patterned feathers.

The wren features strongly in folklore and is associated with the winter solstice. In Ireland and The Isle Of Man there is a tradition of hunting the wren around this time.
