WHERE HAVE ALL THE PEOPLE GONE?

I was going to wait to do my blip until our family had been round later for an evening of food and games, but something a friend said on his Facebook page really resonated with me.

In Swindon we have Christmas Care which provides food, warmth and shelter for the lonely and homeless over Christmas, but that finishes today.

Andrew said,  “Christmas is over for the homeless that are about to be put back on the streets after three nights of warmth, food and company, they go away singing 'I wish it could be Christmas every day’.

We went to Waitrose to do some last-minute grocery shopping and were sitting having our free coffee, when I noticed how empty the cafe was. When we got home I penned the following words - that may not fit exactly, but you will get my drift - to be sung to the tune "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" - and a special thank you to Andrew, who has made ME think.

Where have all the people gone
Long time sleeping
Christmas food and
Christmas drink
They have plenty now.
But for those
who have no home
Their Christmas stops today
When will this world be fair -
When will it ever be fair?

You've enjoyed your Christmas feast
Soon you'll go back to work
To pay off your credit card
Long time to go,
But for those who have no home
They need a cardboard box
When will this world be fair -
When will it ever be fair?

Give a thought for those who sleep
On the streets in towns tonight.
All they need is a helping hand
Could it be yours?
Bless them as they settle down
In the bleak midwinter,
When will this world be fair -
When will it ever be fair?

Homeless folk are human too
But we turn our heads away
So we can't see their distress -
"I'll be upset!"
Spare a thought for them tonight
Then give until it hurts -
Then this world WILL be fair
If we all give with love.

Then the people will ask, "Lord, when did we fail to help you when you were hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in jail?”
The king will say to them, “Whenever you failed to help any of my people, no matter how unimportant they seemed, you failed to do it for me.”
Matthew 25: 44-45
