Patchwork

The most impressive thing from the first week on site is this hearth. It's only about 150 years old, or less. On many sites I've dug, this would have been classed as modern overburden, and machined out :/ I'm very glad we were going carefully through the Victorian stuff, this time.
About 35 years ago, I used to work selling rugs and textiles from the Near and Middle East. It was wonderful to go into work and be surrounded by mad juxtapositions of colour and pattern. Today reminded me of that visual jolt :)
