If you can't beat them...

Russian Box

This is a detail from a Russian box.  A sort which we knew (when we had the jewellers shop) as Laskis.  They are made in a group od small villages 300Km North West of Moscow.

They are produced by a cooperative effort each craftsman doing there part  before passing on to the next - capenter, laquer applier, and Artist.  The background is always black and the inside red.  The production has been going on since such crafts were common place.  Boxes are titled numbered and marked with the village of origin.

Designs can be fairy tales, landscapes wildlife etc.  Each village may use the same subject but the boxes are always different and unique.
Having not spotted anything outside while shopping i decided this was cheerful  and colourful so I used that.  I am pleased with the fact I have avoided shine from the highly lacquered surface.  One day I may blip the other half of the design.
