Above And Beyond...

Robert Falcon Scott

I enjoy taking pictures of Cardiff landmarks and for a while I've wanted to do an aerial one of Roath Park. I had a dental appointment at 9.40am, which is very near. I've been at the same practice for about 50 years. Mel Jones retired about 10 years ago and the practice went private, with young dentist who modernised it all.  Mat must be good as he only works four days a week and his Porsche is parked nearby. Quite re-assuring. After the 3 monthly hygienist appointment I parked up at Roath Park.

I took a photo of the Robert Falcon Scott (born: 6/6/1868) memorial lighthouse in the lake. Captain Scott’s expedition to the Antarctic set out from Roath Dock aboard the ship Terra Nova on June 15th 1910. The unusual choice of Cardiff as the departure point was due to the exceptional contribution of the City to the expedition’s preparations and financing, a relationship that also accounts for the presence of the Scott Memorial in Roath Park.

He was quite a remarkable man. I won't bore you with detailed history but he died about 29 March 1912, and his body is still at Ross Ice Shelf, Antartica. In his final hours, knowing he was dying, he took the trouble to pen letters to relatives of those who had died in his expedition party.

When our way of life is threatened by terrorism, and the people who undertake such barbaric action have no regard or thought for anyone, I think it's great that such monuments exist to pay tribute to exceptional human beings.

Just above The Scott memorial, on the skyline, is Cardiff City Centre where you can see city centre buildings.
