Greater Spotted

Woodpeckers are regular visitors to the feeders at this time of year. They fly over from the woods and the other birds keep very well clear of them when they arrive! This is a male, as the red patch on the back of the head shows, but we think it may be a younger one, perhaps one of last year’s brood, as it seems smaller and fluffier than the others. It is also less wary and made no attempt to fly off as I stepped outside to take the photographs, unlike the older ones who fly off at the slightest movement.
