Guessing game

Oh, I am so tempted to make this a guessing game.  Does anyone know what this is?

We walk past this shrub/small tree every night when we're out dog  Mishka walking.  The scent upwind of it is quite odd.  Very fusty, and it was the smell which lead to the discovery of these flowers which are fairly well hidden.  The flower to the left of the image is the bud, and the flower to the right is the open bloom.  The final stage, the fruit, is edible.

This shrub is not an Australian native but grows extremely well in our Mediterranean climate, being native to the Mediterranean region including Southern Europe, Northern Africa, the larger Mediterranean islands; to the Levant and Middle-East of Western Asia into Iran; and to the Canary Islands and Macaronesia.

When I was a very small child the end product was in cattle feed, and we kids used to rifle through the meal and pick out bits of this stuff to eat.  Mother never knew - she would have had a fit.

No more clues.  I'll give the answer tomorrow.
