What is the bird?

OK, I know it's a rubbish photograph (poor composition, not sharp, etc etc) but I'm hoping someone can identify this bird for me.  The was a pair of them in the garden today, and I don't think I've ever seen them before.  They were small (probably similar in size to a great tit), plump with short tails.

Any bird watchers out there who can help me?
