Cultural Differences - a Series
One of the things that people here do not understand is why the British put vinegar on chips. I've been asked lots of times "is it true that you put salt and vinegar on your fish and chips?" - always accompanied by that you-lot-are-bonkers look.
And when I say yes - I get that pitying look in return. The sort of look that says "I have no idea why you would ruin food like that. The British are mad."
The problem is that here Vinegar (der Essig) is made from wine and British vinegar isn't. This example of a very classic British vinegar is nowhere near as sharp as a white wine vinegar here. This is made from a completely differently process.
As a kid we never had this particular variety. We always had a bottle of "non-brewed condiment " on the table. Normal screw-top lid, punch a few holes through with a fork and away you go.
And if you're from Edinburgh, then it was never salt and vinegar with your fish & chips. In Edinburgh, you are always offered Salt & Sauce. Perhaps another cultural difference for someone else to explain.
Which reminds me, Salt & Vinegar crisps should be in a blue bag. Always.
