Goodbye to the elephants

Picked up the grandsons from school today and went to the zoo to say goodby to our 2 remaining Asian elephants that are soon scheduled to go to the Oklahoma City Zoo amid great local protest and law suits.   One African elephant recently died here and it has long been thought by many that these 2 female elephants really do need a larger multigenerational matriarchal herd to socialize with and there are 5 in Oklahoma including a baby.,   Some wanted them to go to a sanctuary to live out their lives.   The boys are here having a conversation with a zoo volunteer about the frustrations of the choices.   The zoo’s mission is conservation and education, which would be lost at a sanctuary.   It’s not a great photo but I wanted an elephant in it,  (this is Chai. Bamboo had just headed for the barn)  out of focus or not….  We will miss them —I do hope this turns out to be a good thing for them.

We came home, made chocolate chip cookies, and had dinner while the parents had a rare quiet dinner out by themselves.. Friday night is movie night so they picked Ironman to watch....

I just have to add that for a school assignment Oskar had to give a report yesterday about some adult --He picked me and told his class all about my "artistic" and photographic virtues", including knitting, pancake and cookie making.   Well the class voted to have 3 of the 26 adults come to class and though to his disappointment ,I was not voted in on the first round, who could not love this kid for such loving support?!!  He got a good grade on his presentation. ( wish I could have been a fly on the wall to see him!)
