No ‘nqueting’ here any more . . .

I think this has evidence of every aspect of dereliction one could hope to find. I love how the vegetation is growing out of the walls and moss is taking over.

This is Carlisle’s number one eyesore and it was once a grand hotel. It was built in 1880 as the 84 bedroom Central Plaza Hotel. What was once an impressive seven storey building is now a derelict mess, covered in scaffolding to try to protect it, but gradually falling apart.

The hotel closed in 2004 and since then has stood empty. Eventually (I have no idea why) it was transferred to the Duchy of Lancaster, the organisation that manages property for the Queen. Then under an ancient English property law the building was last year declared ownerless. The Queen’s Crown Estate solicitors will neither manage it or market it, but will sell if a potential buyer independently makes an offer.

The City Council have tried to do emergency work to protect it – hence the scaffolding, but other than that, the matter seems to be stalemate. And there it stands in full view of everyone – a sad wreck.

This is the side of the building. I did take pictures of the front that show its size, but it is all covered in scaffolding and shows little of what is actually happening to it. This does!
