Getting in on the act

Today I thought I'd get in on the #CemeterySunday challenge, though this doesn't explain the name of my blip.  That comes from Winchester's wish not to be left behind in the reburying of kings.  Why should Leicester have all the fun, after all?  This week they (Leicester) had a big fa-la with poor old Richard III, but we, after all, have King Alfred the Great - and his hip bone's been found!!  Do you think they'll give it a State funeral?  They will if some of Winchester's - ahem - 'good and great' have their way.

So what does this have to do with today's blip?  Well, I'm standing in St Bartholemew's Churchyard, Hyde.  Just behind me, in 1999, some bones were dug up and put in a box in the museum back room.  Then at the end of 2013 some more bones were dug up from much the same place by a group of local enthusiasts.  Disappointingly, they turned out to be Medieval peasants.  But the original bones were unearthed :) in the museum and amongst the unexplained animal bones was King A's hipbone.  Or possibly Edward the Elder's (his son).

This blip is looking out of the churchyard and across the very narrow road to Hyde Gate, one of the gates of the 11th century Hyde Abbey.  Hyde Abbey was the second place Alfred was buried.  St Bart's was the fourth.

As you can tell, I find the whole story rather amusing, though I'm sure people will get very pompous about it if he (or his hip bone) comes to be re-interred.
