Life on a maple tree

These layers of moss, lichen, and whatever else on this poor maple tree  at due North. But there is a similar pattern growing to a lesser extent all the way around. I assume this does does not bode well for the life of the tree?
The woodpeckers, nuthatches and blue jays like it. There are two suet-seed feeders on the tree now which makes these birds happy. I can watch them from the kitchen window.
