The Harris Shutter Effect

Tonight I had parent's camera club at the boys' school, and we learned about the Harris shutter effect.

The Harris Shutter was invented by Robert Harris of Kodak for making color photographs with the different primary color layers exposed in separate time intervals in succession. The term Harris shutter is applied to the technique or effect. In the days of film, when this was invented, it was a very difficult process, using red, green and blue filters but today, using Photoshop it is relatively easy. The technique uses three images with some time lapse between them and also some areas of movement. We used pouring wine water from a wine bottle! You then select the different channels of red, green and blue from each image and copy it into a new image.

Unfortunately at school their version of Photoshop has not been updated to recognise RAW files from new camera models, so it would not work. I had to come home and do it by myself, although I did have good reference notes....and it worked!

Now off to bed to get a good night's sleep as tomorrow night we will be on a plane.
