Killerton Garden

And so we're homeward bound from north Devon, but not by the straightest route. We popped into National Trust Killerton House and Gardens and had a picnic lunch there. The gardens are extensive and the house grand despite it was only meant to be a temporary dwelling while the main stately home got built - it never did.

The estate was gifted to the National Trust by the 15th Baronet Acland in 1944, when he went into politics and felt it socially (socialistically?) impossible to own a grand estate of ten square miles. Before that the estate was in the Acland family for 400 years.
