Sir Roger

The natural history section of Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is such a magnet for people of all ages. To stand close to an elephant brings home the sheer size of these wonderful animals. This Asian elephant was called Sir Roger.
During the late 1880s, the elephant joined the newly opened zoo in Glasgow. Then at around 27 years old he developed a painful condition and wouldn’t allow zoo staff near him. Reluctantly, he was euthanised but his skin was beautifully preserved and mounted, and Sir Roger was presented to the museum in 1900 and has been on display ever since.
