Alzey

The first day of our semi leisurely trip down through Germany and Switzerland to Lake Como. Leisurely because what could be done in a single, though long, day I have stretched out over three segments.

Our first stop is Alzey, a pretty town in a wine producing area of Germany. I just read on Wikipedia that the town escaped being destroyed during the war when the bombers missed their target due to bad weather.

The town had a castle for hundreds of years until it was destroyed by the French in 1689. The castle which stands today, and shown in the photograph, was built between 1900 -1903 based on an old engraving.

There are many old and fascinating parts of the town. We arrived in Alzey in the late afternoon. It turned out to be a public holiday and so there were quite a few people around enjoying the evening sunshine, especially in the main square where I stopped for a beer.
