Old Coach Road

Two more Wainwrights in the bag today -  Great Dodd and Clough Head.

During the descent we came across this old railway carriage half way up the fell.  It looks as if it has been converted into a sheep shelter or shepherds hut at some time but searching the web reveals considerable debate as to how it got there.

In the valley you can see The Old Coach road which was the route from Penrith to Keswick and beyond.  It must have been pretty lonely driving along this road in a stagecoach in its day.   We had to walk all the way along the section you can see in the picture to get back to our car.

In the far distance you can see the faint outline of Hartside Fell which marks the start of the Pennines and has filled many a Coast to Coast cyclist with fear and trepidation (I did the C2C about 7 years ago)

A rather hazy day made landscape shots difficult
