Shadow

Our last day on the beautiful island of Jersey.  We had our last breakfast with our 'group' - it felt a bit like the Last Supper! - and checked out of the hotel to begin the journey home.  As our flight was not until the evening, we had the whole day to catch a few last bits of the island.

The Glass Church was amazing (but it's white and made of concrete...said John!)  the 'glass' was internal and very special in its way, but has the special glass designed by the French glass designer, Rene Lalique.  Simple and beautiful, but the coachloads of tourists rather detract from its spiritual focus. Image included in an 'extra'.

We then went out to Elizabeth Castle - which is really just a fortress built to take over from Gorey Castle when the gunpowder age took over.  as the tide was covering the causeway we took the amphibious bus/boat out. This was fun - life jackets overhead and safety briefing like the planes! It was strange to be driving along one minute and then floating the next.  We were able to walk back though as the tide was then well out!

I admit to finding Elizabeth Castle quite dull but the photographic opportunities were fantastic.  I did take lots of 'views' but then diverted to the more 'quirky' shots of reflections, rusty items and shadows! My blip is of the view through one of the windows in the castle and the shadow from the strong sun.

A causeway joins the Castle to the Hermitage and the abbey here was founded in 1155 - poor St Helier was subsequently martyred.  The small chapel seems to be guarded by an extremely raucous seagull who screeches loudly at anyone climbing the steps (very steep) up to the site.

After a short tour along the bay to take in the views and sea air it was time to head for the airport.  The flight actually took off early but we were then held in a stack over Gatwick airport so no advantage!  Now home to the inevitable washing and unpacking and yet another late blip!
