Fez : Kairouine University and Mosque & Tanneries

1st photo:  Kairouine University and Mosque  in Fez medina

The minaret (partly green tiled) and green roofed buildings to the left of this photo are the site of what is claimed to be the world's oldest university: it was established in 859 by a Tunisian woman refugee, Fatima el-Fihria.

Only accessible to Muslims, so this view from a neighbouring hill has to suffice.

Note the close (and unambiguous) similarity between this minaret and Chicago's Carbon and Carbide Building, built in Art Deco style in the 1920s - which just happens to be my favourite building in the city!

2nd photo: Chaouwara Tanneries

You smell this thousand year old site well before you reach it.

Fascinating: it just has to be seen, so take a sprig of mint to mask the miasma, you will end up believing it.
