But, then again . . . . .

The Gokstad Ship.

After a good night's sleep in a gently rocking boat, we woke to find ourselves virtually surrounded by the Norwegian coast. The approach to Oslo was warm, sunny and scenic views of strange islands -  including the first extra of what appears to be a church sitting on a rock that  is slightly too small, (the balcony does overhang the rock).

After breakfast, we went for an expensive ride on a little tourist train around the centre of Oslo; it was a bumpy ride with poor viewing facilities and a commentary in various languages that didn't synchronise with the appearance of the objects of interest. It was all part of the tourist scene.

A little later we went on a visit to three of the museums; I had booked it yesterday  evening a quarter of an hour before the office closed. The rep told me that they had stopped taking bookings for it several hours earlier but it just so happened that she had two tickets handy that we could have. We travelled to the Viking museum in a nice comfortable coach with good views of the local landmarks and a guide who gave a highly (free) informative commentary on the sights that we had missed an hour earlier.

The blip is of what was a pleasure boat, built around 890 AD, that ended its days as a burial boat; the second extra is a detail of the carving on its prow.
