Fred & Andy

Probiscus monkeys

The flight leaves at 9am. Its with Trigana Air and is a small propeller plane so Andy's not too keen but all goes well and we land at tiny Pangkalan Bun airport where we are met by Faris, who is going to be a guide over the next three days.  We also see the first other westerners we've seen for a long time.

We are taken straight to our klotok and meet the boss, Jenie, and the crew of three - a cook, capitain and an assistant - unfortunately we've managed to forget all their names except for Ana, the cook (how rude). We head off down the river and stop at the first feeding station for the semi wild orangutans. Its ok and there aren't too many tourists (perhaps 15-20) but its a bit like watching feeding time at the zoo. Although we know the orangutans do live in the jungle and are free to not come to the feeding station, it just seems a bit fake ... we knew it would be like this though and they are very cute.

In the late afternoon we see loads of probiscus monkeys alongside the river where they come to feed and sleep. Its great. Unfortunately our camera is not particularly good for wildlife but we got a few shots. After an amazing dinner cooked by Ana we take a night walk with one of the rangers. We forget the camera stupidly but we see a tarantula, many other big and some poisonous spiders, a scorpion, a few frogs, grasshoppers and cicadas. Its really good fun walking in the jungle at night. Fred is slightly spooked at some of the creepy crawlies but we really enjoy it and want to go again with the camera ... unfortunately we can't.

Bed is set out on the top deck of the klotok - a mattress on the floor with a mosquito net so after a few games of backgammon we retire and listen to the jungle sounds as we go to the sleep.
