Fred & Andy

Life on the river in Pangkalan Bun

We wake early again and after breakfast cruise back to the village of Kumai where we started our trip. Overall, although it hasn't been the jungle experience we had in Gunung Pallung, we've enjoyed it and it would have been a shame not to have seen orangs in Borneo ... even if they weren't completely wild.

Faris takes us round a few hotels and we finally settle on one, only to check out again 30 minutes later as it has no window in the room and Andy is feeling claustrophobic. We have a coffee, phone a couple of too expensive places, then settle for another hotel we looked at earlier. We have a room with a window but with shared bathroom but that's fine. The only downside is there is a wedding going on across the road with very loud and not very good karaoke ... we are told it will be finished by 9pm.

In the afternoon Jenie and Faris come to meet us and take us down the river in Pangkalan Bun where many people live. We take a small boat and watch life on the river go by - kids playing, ladies washing clothes, people bathing alongside timber yards and other types of industry. Its a really clean town and apparently wins the yearly competition for cleanliness in the area. The government has really tried to educate people about litter in this province and it seems to be working.

The town comes to life after dark with lots of clothes stalls opening up and Andy busy a t-shirt. The wedding noise does stop just before 9pm so we are able to get an early night as we're both tired.
