Flying the Flag

There are many wonderful plants in the iris family, Iridaceae, but very hard to beat is this cracker, Diplarrena moraea, from Tasmania, Victoria and New South Wales in Australia, where it's known as the White Iris, or Butterfly Flag.

It seems to be hardy, enjoys sunshine and good drainage and flowers in late spring and early summer. The flowers are rather exotic and wave around on long, flexible stems. If you can find it you should try it!
