Above And Beyond...

Gabalfa Interchange

I've been wanting to do an aerial image of Gabalfa fly-over for a while as it is a bit of a Cardiff landmark and one I remember being built.

Gabalfa is a district in the north of the city of Cardiff, capital of Wales.. It is characterised by an enormous fly over road at the Gabalfa Interchange, where the A48 road meets the A470 road (North Road) which leads from Cardiff to northern Wales, and the A469 Caerphilly Road.

The name is derived from the Welsh 'Ceubalfa', which is literally translated as 'place of the boat'. It was formerly the site of a ferry crossing across the River Taff, upon which a school is now built.

Excavations were necessary to form the new highway linking Eastern and Western Avenue. Two bridges were built above the avenue, as part of a roundabout controlling the traffic flow along five roads, while a flyover provided a third tier carrying vehicles directly towards the city centre.
More than 100 houses as well as a number of other landmarks disappeared, among them the local library and the Regal Dance Hall.  The most notable casualties of progress were St Marks Church and its vicarage. The Queen officially opened Eastern Avenue in December 1971.

The son arrived in the UK from Malaysia on Tuesday. He's put his business up for sale and will be moving to the UK permanently. He popped in this morning and it was great to see him for a catch up. Hopefully he will get a job soon that will enable him to bring his wife and daughter here. It'll be good to see the grand daughter which we haven't met yet.

The extra photo is of him this morning in the conservatory whilst we were having a chat.
