Life in Newburgh on Ythan

Haar

In these parts coastal mist or fog is known as haar. As surely as night follows day, after a really warm day the haar will roll in from the sea to smother the land.

Interestingly, although the country folk use 'haar' the fisher folk never do, preferring 'fog' while their prime choice is 'thickness'. Thickness comes in varying densities; thick, smore thick, tar thick and thick as guts. (Smore means to smother).
