A view from Jeanneb

Sunday in Uig.

This is Uig Bay, SW Lewis. A much more forgiving area than the flatter north of the island and this bay has the biggest expanse of sand on the island. You can see some of the beaches across the water. It is on the northern side of the Uig peninsular and gives onto the Atlantic.

It is quite isolated with a one way road, much of which being single track but non the less very popular with campers. Lots of people pitching on the Machiar near the sandy beaches. Very busy as it is the Scottish school holiday and yet the beaches still seem very quiet.

The beach is famous too as this is where a crofter dug up the Lewis chessmen in a sand dune in 1831. They originated from Norway in the 12th century when these islands were run by Norse men. Carved out of Walrus there were 93 pieces, now housed in museums.

The reference to Sunday is that we nearly had a misadventure.
Nothing opens here on a Sunday, even the ferries didn't used to run though they do now. There was a sign as we reached the bay for a cafe, shop and petrol station. Chris decided that perhaps we should get some. Not open! I had told him!

We made it back and are now in Tarbert in North Harris, we hope to see some more fab beaches in South Harris tomorrow, there supposed to be the best, before leaving for Skye on the late afternoon ferry. If we can get some petrol of course in the morning!

We've been so lucky again to have another glorious warm day!

Sorry if I have missed anybody with my commenting, less laid back here than last week.
