Like the Primrose,and Cowslip this is one of those wild plants which has chosen to arrive unannounced in the garden.  Fortunately I like them I have been fascinated by them and the Bumble Bees going deep into the trumpets since I would see them growing in the dyke backs (hedge bottoms) as a lad.

Scientific name Digitalis purpurea it was (is?) the source for the heart medicine.  It is a biennial or short lived perennial.  The fact that it freely seeds means it often appears to be living longer than it actually did as new generations disguise the fact the parent plant has died.
