Above And Beyond...

West Usk Lighthouse

I thought I'd do an aerial view and decided on West Usk Lighthouse which is in the village of St Brides, Newport. Walking along the sea wall, the wind wasn't half blowing, and controlling the quad-copter was a bit of a battle. Even some small birds seemed to be having trouble flying against the wind. You can see the effects on the tide that was in.

West Usk Lighthouse a Grade 2 listed building on the Severn Estuary at the mouth of the River Usk south of the city of Newport, South Wales.
The lighthouse was the first to be built by renowned Scottish civil engineer James Walker in 1821. Amongst other projects, Walker went on to build another 21 lighthouses. The land around the lighthouse has been reclaimed as farmland but it stood on an island until 1856. It was decommissioned as an operational lighthouse in 1922.

The lighthouse is currently operating as a hotel and in July 2008 featured in an episode of the television series The Hotel Inspector.
For hotel guests, a private road off the B4239 leads to the lighthouse. Alternatively, it may be reached by a 0.62 mile walk along the sea wall footpath from the car park of the Lighthouse Inn on Beach Road. The less substantial East Usk Lighthouse, on the opposite bank of the River Usk, is within the Newport Wetlands wildlife reserve.

You can also get married at the hotel, as well as enjoy B&B. They have their own website to look at should the fancy take you!

I've previously done a blip of this from the ground (here) last year.
