Trematon Castle

We visited Trematon Castle Gardens, near Plymouth, this sunny afternoon wandering around the recently restored gardens.  The Castle Trematon belonged to the Duke of Cornwall since the Norman Conquest and is built on the ruins of an earlier Roman Fort.  It survives as a miniature Norman castle, motte and bailey with a gatehouse built to be fit as lodgings for Edward, Prince of Wales, known as the ‘Black Prince’.

The new owners have over the past few years developed the gardens around part of the land and opened them to the public.  There are wonderful views of the River Tamar looking towards Plymouth, which can just be seen in the photo.

Must go now off to find some Night Jars with the local bird group.
