Standing tall

Arrived in Stornaway last night and set off for the Butt of Lewis today, which is not as might be supposed at the bottom, but at the top of the island! Being a Sunday nothing in Lewis is open, and many local people could be seen setting off for church attired in black. I was well aware of the way of life here, but still surprised to find that even the major supermarkets were closed and the kids' playgrounds were closed - until recently, we were told, the swings were chained to the poles! We did manage to buy some sandwiches at the only garage in town that was open.

The middle of Lewis is very bleak, but the top end is well populated with many croft houses and their replacements lining the roads. Again, loads of pictures to choose from, but I really had to go for this one of the standing stones at Calanais, better known as Callanish.

My extra picture today is of the brick lighthouse up at the Butt of Lewis.
