The old method

Today we set off en route for Harris, which is not an island in its own right though it's usually named as such. It's part of southern Lewis and very different in geology. Lewis is largely acid bog and crofting land, but Harris is bleak, rocky and much more spectacular.

Before reaching Harris, however, we turned off down the southern side of Loch Eireasort, a sea loch, and after visiting the Ravenspoint Visitor Centre drove right down to the end of the road at the small settlement of Leumrabhagh. We relaxed on a seat right beside the road, fearful of getting our toes run over, but in the few hours that we spent there only one vehicle passed! We sat and enjoyed the comings and goings of the locals on the other side of the bay. Very entertaining and far too much to tell you about here!

We watched a crofter and his wife bringing some sheep off the hill with the aid of three dogs, and then setting about shearing them by hand.

Later on we drove across to the other side and I asked the man if I could come in and take some pictures, to which he agreed.

My extra picture today is of the post office at Balallan, where we bought some stamps as there was nothing else to buy, not even post cards. All beautifully rural!
