Temporary!

River Eamont (Part 14)

I felt I couldn't leave Eamont Bridge and continue the riverside journey without blipping the footbridge that is beside the stone arched bridge. It isn't very pretty, but at least it has stood up to episodes of flooding that have carried away less substantial bridges. It is a steel tubular structure built by Tubewrights Ltd, Newport Mon. Or at least that's what it says on the bridge (see extra picture). And when I looked this up I discovered that there are lots of similar bridges all over the country.

Not very pretty, but that's okay as it is only temporary.

Well, at least it was 60 years ago, when it was put up as a safety measure 'until such time as the masonry highway bridge could be suitably widened'. Apparently, when the bridge was built in 1955, the MP for Westmorland described it as 'ugly' and asked a question in the House of Commons about it. He was given the written reply about it being temporary. In 2005 the local paper wrote about a 'temporary' bridge that had lasted half a century! I think it will probably still be there to celebrate its century.

My next blip in this series will be a Blipmeet - hopefully!
