For once the picture says it all.


The poem is taken from the Manyoshu, the first anthology of poetry in Japanese.  It is believed to have been compiled in the mid eighth century by the master poet Otomo no Yakamochi.  Although the Manyoshu is little known in the West, it is, in fact, one of the great works of world literature and is still the basis of the teaching of all poetry in Japan.
