Arran dominates the horizon from a surprisingly wide range of viewpoints, from the Ayrshire coast at Ayr all the way to Loch Striven and further north in Argyll. This afternoon, as we returned from a walk along the loch on the second of the two sunny days we're being allowed this week, we noticed how clear the Arran hills were, the ridges and summits clearly defined on what would have been a peerless day for climbing them.

However, I suspect the clarity may well have been linked to the fact that the cloud was already drifting in and there was the hint of moisture in the air; we used to say on Arran holidays that if you could see the Ayrshire coast it was because it would soon be raining, and if you couldn't it was because it was already raining.

Ah, the wit ...
