Peterloo Victims Remembered In Library Walk

On Monday 16 August 1819 Manchester had wonderful weather. The workers who were paid so little  and had no vote were weary. Thousands had rallied to try and achieve better conditions, From all over Manchester and surrounding parts people marched in their 'Sunday best' .They were going to listen to a well known speaker one Henry Hunt ,it was to be the largest protest known and all went there peacefully . Men , women and children. When the chairman of the magistrates who lived nearby saw the enthusiastic reception Hunt received he immediately set into action a chain of events which led to the cavalry charging on the people .Within minutes the crowd had been dispersed leaving 11 dead and over 600 injured .                                END OF SHORT HISTORY LESSON
The mosaic floor in the glassed ceiling part of libary walk has the same mosaic as within the Town Hall . However certain flowers have an illuminated red centre and a name .They are victims of the Peterloo Massacre. Here are but three of them .
Left SARAH JONES of Silk Street Salford she had 7children and had been beaten around her head by a truncheon .
Middle .MARY HEYS of Oxford Road . Pregnant at the time she was ridden over by cavalry .She died the following day .
Right.WILLIAM DAWSON of Saddleworth.Sabred, crushed he was killed where he stood.
The extra shows the mosaic floor and if you  look by the lady you will see at least two such red centred flowers .

There is talk of a memorial to all or so I was informed.I hope so since the murals within the town hall do not show it. At the time it was  considered best forgotton. The background to the collage is a shot of the astonishing glass ceiling.
