Calm discovery

Long before the days of satnavs to help us find places we needed to visit but had not been before, I believed the best way to find my way about was to walk the streets.
In my days as a news reporter, that was a surefire way to get to know a new place, a different town even the surroundings that you thought you knew well.
The beauty of that was that you would recognise places that you might need only visit once again, maybe not at all. But when the need arose, maybe in the early hours, or against a tight deadline, you had a good idea of the location and how to get there.
It also gave you the opportunity to seek out quiet corners of tranquillity in the most unlikely places. This charming corner is just feet from a busy road junction in the middle of a town, yet thanks to the thought and foresight of the local people, traders and no doubt the local authority, quiet corners like this allow you the opportunity to shut yourself off from the hustle and bustle of daily routine and hectic life around.
I doubt if your satnav would find it, and just what would you feed in as the address anyway. And trying to learn your way round a patch in a car would allow the serene delights or corners like this escape you entirely.

There’s still something to be said for walking and health advisers are regularly telling us how beneficial walking as exercise is for us, even for just 20 minutes a day. Let me tell you, it is not only for the good of your heart. It’s the beauty of what you can discover that will remain in your memory for ever.
