One has to ask how anyone can make a pig's ear of wiring up a simple doorbell?  

However, apart from the artistic imbroglio of wires blipped here, the door bell is routed through the master bedroom (I'm sure there was a reason...) where two wires disappear under the landing, only one of which emerges.

Maybe it connects to the telephone wiring?
