Day 12

We left Streaky Bay nice and early this morning but not before I took advantage of a glorious sunrise.  I can see why people come to Streaky Bay and never leave, it's absolutely glorious.  I was interested to see a photographer setting up for the sunrise shots and thought I would take a photo of her.  As I set myself up I heard the thunder of hooves and to everyone's great surprise a horse came charging down the beach.  It was one of those moments and I just had to blip this image tonight.  I'm actually astonished to find that we have internet connection at Eucla.  Last time we came through we were using a pay phone to call home and let everyone know we had crossed the Nullarbor Plains without a hitch.

We've had a huge driving day today and late this afternoon we saw the sign "Welcome to Western Australia" - almost home, well at least we're on the home stretch.  Three more big days before we arrive at the Indian Ocean.

The greatest thrill of all today was our visit to the "Head of the Bight" - the Great Australian Bight that is.  We were just so lucky to see several whales and their calves and we were like two kids in a lolly shop.  We didn't know where to look.  They were so difficult to photograph as they were just lolling  around in the ocean with their calves but it was an incredible privilege to stand on the board walk and witness such a miracle of nature.  There have been 76 sightings of whales this year.  We were intrigued to find out that the whales return each year and they stay for quite a long time before moving on.  I have added an image as an extra - this lovely mum was having a lovely time sunbaking on her back while her calf was close by.

We were so sad to leave our friends at Streaky Bay this morning but on the other hand just so joyful that we had been able to meet and spend such wonderful quality time together.  We're already planning our next meet up.
