Clearing Storm, Bryce Canyon

Woke to torrential rain so at 6 am we agreed to put off the dawn re-visit to Bryce Canyon.  It didn't look any more hopeful after breakfast with heavy rain and low cloud but we decided to head back to the canyon as it was on our way to our next stop over.

Everyone was glad they did!  As we walked out on to the rim of the canyon the clouds begin to lift and eddy around us, a magical time which lasted for almost two hours.  The clouds shifted, lifted, came back down.  Sunlight burst through and was then hidden again behind swirling clouds.  No two moments were the same and everyone got bucket loads of images.

The adage that the best light is often on the margins of good and bad weather, was never truer.  In the end I chose a close up, rather than the big view of the valley below.  I have added it to the extras so you can get some idea of the conditions.

Today was the 'worst' and 'best' weather of the trip.  With heavy rain, interspersed with bright conditions.  We also had a fantastic meal in the evening and have the opportunity to revisit the restaurant as Kanab is our overnight location for the next two nights.  Tomorrow we head for the north rim of the Grand Canyon.

Just one final thought.  A number of people lost their lives in flash floods caused by the heavy rain of the last 24 hours in Utah.  We are safe, but saw many locations where water had flooded across the road.  River beds were in spate and the normal conditions were gone.  It is shocking how quickly the hot conditions we have been seeing have changed in just 24 hours.
