Painted mountains

After a few hours drive from Salta, we arrived in the beautiful area. We walked around a market in Purmamarca, saw an old church, then headed up through these colourful hills for a few hours. It was lovely - some of the erosion was similar to Bryce Canyon in USA, and the painted desert in Arizona.

Hopefully a geographer will explain why it is like this - erosion in the wet summer, plus minerals of some kind in other areas making the contrast.

We are at an extremely simple posada, but have no room - the key is lost and the window broken, so they have sent for someone to change a lick. I'm not hopeful - the guide has loaned us his room so we can have a shower at least, but his has no lock either. It's a bit disappointing as we are here for two nights so looked forward to being able to wash our socks! But that's adventure travel, things happen, we can pull the bed behind the door for the night, if all else fails. And there is wifi in the foyer!
