Dancing on Sky Water

It's October, which is to say that it's the pumpkin time of year. And nobody does pumpkins up better than Penn State's Arboretum! There are pumpkins and gourds of all sizes, colors, and kinds strewn about the Arboretum, and they are all delightfully arranged. It's tempting to play with them (though the signs say look but do not touch).

And so it was time for the Dancing Girls' annual pumpkin ride! Some years, we actually do the ride on Halloween itself, as was the case last year. But this year, we decided to go a little earlier. (Perhaps this will be the year that we'll do it TWICE. Wouldn't that be fun?)

So on my way out the door in the morning, I grabbed the two trusty cat-steeds from where they hang out on the fridge. And I selected two lucky and adventurous Dancing Girls off the fuchsia plant to participate in the pumpkin extravaganza.

And so we drove to the Arboretum and saddled up. And away we all went! The Dancing Girls rode jubilantly through the piles of pumpkins, and all around the strolling gardens. We couldn't resist a visit to the sunflower patch - check out the extra photo. :-)

We couldn't leave the gardens without a visit to the lily pond. And there the Dancing Girls dismounted their steeds and each one chose a lily bud to sit on. It was there that we quietly contemplated the beauty of the morning, among the cloud reflections on the pond: sky water, as Thoreau called it. And the world was never more lovely. Oh, come dancing with us on sky water. . . .

The song to accompany this whimsical image is the Kinks, with Come Dancing.
