Hoverfly

Walked up to the local shops to get bread and bits. Son number one is coming home this evening so we had to get a celebratory packet of jaffa cakes for later.

The pond is looking much more settled and is full of chironomid larvae. They don't seem to have any predators (not sure if the newts are still around). We're hoping that some other pond creatures will move in soon and redress the balance. A pond snail has appeared already - wonder if it was on some of the plants. The algae has subsided a bit - not sure if the chironomid larvae are eating it?

This hoverfly was resting alternately on the cobbles by the water feature and one of the lily pads.
