A bit of a Ruin

It has been a wet day here in Budapest but we have had a fantastic time.

Spent the morning finishing our city bus tour (second day free)
which we curtailed on Castle Hill yesterday and then headed to the Grand Central Market. Had a browse around this fantastic place and then met up with our guide for our walking food tour of the old town of Pest this afternoon.

We had a tour of the market looking at Hungarian specialities and eating a local cheesy bread and sausages. From there we went to a specialist fish cafe and had fried carp, smoked catfish and a silver carp pate.

This was followed by a visit, to the most wonderful hand made chocolate shop, see extra, for a chocolate of your choice and a Retro '70s cafe for a Spritz.
We were now in the Jewish quarter and on our way for a Matzo soup we popped in to look at this 'Ruin' cafe. These have become a phenomenon here since the beginning of the 21st century and there are over 60 in the Jewish quarter. Derelict properties have been given a basic renovation to make them safe and furnished with an eclectic mix of leftover furniture, crazy art work and bric a brac to make fascinating bars and cafes which have opened up Budapest's social scene.

Our final stop was at a wonderful pastry shop for Goulash soup followed by sour cherry schnitzel. We didn't need any tea!

We headed back to the hotel for an evening in the bar to redeem our 2 for 1 cocktail vouchers and celebrate A's birthday in style. (She spent the evening sitting in a swing seat suspended from the ceiling)

A bit of rain doesn't stop us!
