Calling the past

Wide Angle Wednesday: Long Distance Call

In homage to Hobbs whose Wide Angle Wednesday was such fun, and so instructive, I popped out this evening intending to take some light trails.  But I couldn't resist this shot of a telephone box, all lit up in the dark.  The red seemed strangely festive somehow.

Call boxes take me back to my university days, and regular long distance phone calls to a girlfriend back home.  Today's students all have their own  personal mobile phone of course.  The need to plan for such calls, ensuring that you had sufficient change and that the person you were calling was likely to be near a phone at the other end, are alien to modern day students.    The hassles that went with phone boxes will not be missed: queueing to use them, the agony of a private conversation being overheard by the line of people standing outside awaiting their turn, the frustration at the vandalism from which (inevitably)such phones suffered, the smell of cigarette smoke and stale urine etc.

Yes indeed, the mobile phone generation don't know they are born!
