Quod oculus meus videt

Sunlight Streaming Through

While I was enjoying a benign and bright morning at Weston Park, my thoughts were with the residents of Cumbria, suffering yet more heartache as the waters rose due to the amount of rain that has fallen recently.  It is hard to take in the volumes of water coming down fell sides and through valleys, inundating properties that had hardly begun to dry out from the last deluge.

I get regular training in emergency response to disasters and we often practice our response and recovery to flooding.  Where I live there is very little risk that such an event will happen, so these skills will hopefully never be needed.  However, well the emergency and support services performed in such circumstances I am under no illusion that we can do more than protect life and put in place the recovery operations afterwards.  For those directly affected the impact is remains devastating.  At this time of year it is particularly cruel.
