Eye of a needle

The eve of 2016 has been spent wandering around Caceres (well worth a visit), enjoying some excellent local produce and drinks, and watching the start of the San Silvestre Caceres XXth edition - more than 6000 people squeezing out of the Plaza Major through a narrow inflatable archway. You'd have thought, with all the wonderful stone archways they have here, they could have used one of those.

Not sure where the race ended, but that was the last we saw of it. 10km, I think.

Anyway, tomorrow there will be time enough to take more pictures - and blip them - of the amazing old "monumental town" of Caceres (although see extra for a taster). We've really really enjoyed today. Very chilled. A bit chiller than yesterday and grey skies for the most part (and a couple of drops of rain), but still warm enough to sit out for our morning coffee. We expected it to be colder here, as it's a part of Spain (Extremadura) which has the reputation for very cold winters, but so far we've been fairly lucky.

We're taking a raincheck on trying to go out and find a meal in a restaurant tonight. We've procured some bits and pieces, and we are going to have a quiet and contemplative Hogmanay. And since it's a wonderful hotel we are in, we might as well enjoy it.
