Learning day by day

The Most Amazing Day!

Carys and I were waiting for a train to London before 08.00 this morning, the train we were waiting for was cancelled, but luckily Mummy had factored in this eventuality as we needed to be at the Coliseum Theatre in London for 09.15. This was because one of Carys's Christmas presents (from N&P) was a Family Nutcracker Ballet Workshop with the English National Ballet.

We made it, just in time and surprised Carys by meeting Mummyandgirl. It was lovely to watch the two girls run to each other and hug each other when they realised who they were looking at. We had to go round to the stage door, the girl was bouncing with excitement, mine was slightly quieter, nerves I think. That disappeared when, after putting on ballet shoes they went out onto the stage. I have to say it was amazing, looking out into the auditorium from the stage, a goose pimple moment.

As it was a family workshop parents were encouraged to join in. One Mama of our two was banished to the stalls to watch (for which I will be ever grateful as it is because of that I have these photos) whilst this Mama was told to stay and join in. Yes if you look closely you can see me in the shot.

We did a warm up and were then split into groups to practise miming being at a party, worked out our own 'snowflake' poses and then were taught some simplified exerts from the ballet, which we eventually performed in two groups. The girls were in their element, with a real ballerina from the company to dance with and the company pianist playing for them.

The best part for me was when they went back into the wings to change before being shown costumes. They both sat down to change and then their minds blew when they realised that beside them was one of the company ballerinas warming up for class. The youngest girl could hardly tear her eyes from the ballerina stretching, whilst the big girl was staring at the two pairs of pointe shoes, just next to her feet.

Costumes viewed, pointe shoes Christmas tree visited we headed off to Covent Garden where we deemed baby 'cinos were necessary. After a little wander we went our separate ways with two very happy girls. Carys was very happy indeed as the second part of her present is the Youth Workshop next Saturday, same place, same time.
